Callie Cyr

Teaching is like bouncing on a trampoline—you bounce together hoping to push the other higher!

I plan on becoming an elementary teacher, and my ideal grades to teach would be 2nd grade (because I love the age) or 5th grade (because I love the curriculum, but I think I would be happy anywhere in between.

Introduction

My name is Callie Cyr and I am a sophomore at California State University, Chico, studying to become a teacher.  I am enrolled in the ITEC (Integrated Teacher Education Core) program, which will earn me a major in Liberal Studies with a minor in Special Education. I hope to graduate in May 2014 and have my credential by May 2015.

Philosophy

My philosophy is pretty simple on the surface: every child should feel like they have the ability to succeed.  In order to create an environment for my students to be able to feel this way, I believe it is important to make them feel like they should never feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask a question.  In order to do this, I will balance group time with individual time because I recognize that some students will not feel comfortable asking questions in front of the class, and that isn't necessarily because they are embarrassed to ask for help publicly, but that perhaps they just may not be comfortable speaking in front of others at all.  I believe that there are many different learning styles, and my job is to try to cater to every one of them so that I can best help my students succeed.  As I consider what this means when looking at the formal educational philosophies, I realize that I very much agree with the view of progressivism.  I believe that learning through doing and using real life to facilitate learning is one of the most effective ways to teach and to learn.
